A state of the art review on the use of fungi in biofiltration to remove volatile hydrophobic pollutants

Abstract The physical/chemical abatement of gas pollutants creates many technical problems, is costly and entails significant environmental impacts. Biological purification off-gases a cheap ecologically safe way neutralization pollutants. Despite the recent advances, main technological challenge nowadays volatile organic compounds (VOCs) hydrophobic character due to their low solubility in water. Among all known biological methods air purification, most cost-effective biodegradation VOCs conducted by biotrickling filters. In this context, fungi have gained an increasing interest field based on ability biodegrade VOCs. addition, filtration using can support superior VOC when compared bacterial biofilters. This paper aims at reviewing latest research results concerning biocatalytic activity evaluating possibilities practical application biofiltration systems remove
